The benefit of any VET course is real industry experience. Once again, the SongMakers mentoring program run by APRA AMCOS has made a real difference and given students access to a taste of that experience with students from South Australian schools, Open Access College, Christies Beach High School, Seaford Secondary College, Willunga High School, Wirreanda Secondary School & Yankalilla Area School recently involved in a two-day workshop with Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe) and Grant Windsor (Music Producer).
Students began day one listening to industry stories and the mentors’ experiences, before getting involved in creative writing and group sessions to come up with lyrics and music to an original song. The second day continued with rehearsals and the recording process continuing to hone songwriting, arranging, rehearsing and production skills. One thing’s for sure, the days were equal parts inspiring, rewarding and exhausting for students. “Doing the SongMakers Program was an amazing experience,” said Bohdy-Jay Kemp (Wirreanda Secondary School). “Kav and Grant gave us a really good insight into how to write a song and, in turn, have made me a better, more confident songwriter!”
SongMakers 2016 marks the third year of the national program. Go to www.songmakers.com.au to hear some of the workshop songs and for information about the high profile mentors.
